The Kind of Equipment You Can Use To Make Beats

If you are an aspiring beat maker, then you have to know what equipment that you will need. In our discussion today, we are going to talk about the different types of equipment that you can choose from.

We’ll talk about samplers, keyboards, synthesizers and workstations.

To begin with, let’s make sure you know what a sample is.A sample is a small piece of music that comes from some other recording. This piece of music can be used as a piece of another song or as an instrument. Sampling is what it is called when you go about getting the sample. Today a sampler is either a piece of hardware to or some program on a computer.

Everyone knows what a keyboard is, but still let’s spend a little bit of time talking about them.

They come in 49,61,76 and 88 keys. For a basic keyboard you can get one from around $79 on up depending on what features it has on it. If you are going to make beats, you want to make sure that it is midi compatible and has a good number of sounds stored in it. You also want to see if it comes with any patches.

The next piece of equipment that you should be aware of is the synthesizer. Synthesizers look a lot like your keyboards, however you will find that you may have a lot more sounds on them. There are also usually a lot more sound editing and performance features on a synthesizer than a keyboard.

The other piece of equipment that you will find out in the market is the workstation. Similar to the synthesizer, they also include a lot of recording features that the other equipment that we have discussed does not include.

You can record and create music through Midi capabilities or through straight recording of an audio sound. The workstations are manufactured with either 61 keys or 88 keys. The workstation normally costs the most out of the different equipment that we have discussed.

The final piece of equipment that we will discuss is the sequencer. The sequencer is actually a program that serves as both a player and a recorder. You can find them as standalone pieces of equipment or built into the keyboard or workstation. There are basically three different kinds. There are the standalone sequencers, the Mac based computer software sequencers and the Window based computer software sequencers.

Do Your Beats Match Your Style?

If you are into beat making, then by this time you must know that there are a lot of different types of beats that you can make. You have the East Coast, West Coast, hip hop, club, R&B, Gospel, and Dirty South to name just a few of the 40+ styles that are out there.

The question you must answer for yourself is what is your style? You must decide if you are going to make all different types of beats, or are you going to concentrate on a particular style. It is important that you decide on what is best for you. To begin with, it is important to decide as to what is your favorite. If you don’t have a favorite, then what is the style or genre that fits you and your personality? What type of music do you like to listen to? Are you a rap music fan?  Do you prefer a gospel sound, country sound or maybe an R&B sound?

Whatever type of music you prefer, take some time to really study it and take some time and listen to the beats to that style. Listen for where the emphasis is and on what number beat that you hear is accented. Listen to the style and see if it fits your personality. You see most people have a type of music that matches their musical personality. You want to make sure that your beats also match that style. If they don’t really fit you, then they are not going to have the correct sound when you finish creating them.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. If you are not a jazz enthusiast, then you probably are best not to make any jazz beats. You need to understand the sound of jazz as well as the syncopation of the jazz beat if you are going to make some jazz beats. You want to make sure that the beats that you make will show your ability as well as show your musical strength. They must match the flow and rhythm of the lyrics. It is important for you to carefully listen to other songs in your chosen genre.

Your ear will become a tremendous tool as you are making your beats. Listen to different voices as they repeat the lyrics. Listen to the use of various drums as you mix and mesh them into the beat. Remember that as you make the beats that it is the combination of the beats as well as the lyrics and melody that make the connection between the fans and the music.
