How To Start A Record Label

There are a lot of different ways that you can make money in the hip hop industry.

If you have made a CD and have released it for sale, then technically you have created your own record label.

Of course if you want to do this as a business, then there are some legal steps that you should take.

Remember the purpose of a record label is to release records. These might be your own or they might be records made by other people.

To actually make this into a viable business, there are some steps that you should take.

You’ll need to decide on a name for your business. You have to make sure that no one else is using the name. You want to use a name that will brand you as well as your music.

You’ll have to file a business license. This allows you to run the business under the name that you have selected.

You’ll need to know how you are going to run the business. In other words, you must know what business structure that you are going to use.

The three main business entities that you can operate a business under are a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation.

In a sole proprietorship, you are responsible for all profits, losses and expenses.

In a partnership, two or more people go into business and each partner brings something to the partnership. The profits losses and expenses are divided up between the partners.

If you want to incorporate, the best thing to do is to work with an attorney as well as your accountant who will guide you with the proper way to set this up.

You’ll probably need to get a city business license. The next step will be to get a tax identification number. This will vary from state to state, so you’ll need to check with your state.

You’ll need to get a sales tax license, charge your customers sales tax, collect that and then send it into the state.

If you also exist as a publishing company, you’ll want to join BMI or ASCAP or both. This will help to make sure that any performance
royalties will be paid to you.
