Do Your Beats Match Your Style?

If you are into beat making, then by this time you must know that there are a lot of different types of beats that you can make. You have the East Coast, West Coast, hip hop, club, R&B, Gospel, and Dirty South to name just a few of the 40+ styles that are out there.

The question you must answer for yourself is what is your style? You must decide if you are going to make all different types of beats, or are you going to concentrate on a particular style. It is important that you decide on what is best for you. To begin with, it is important to decide as to what is your favorite. If you don’t have a favorite, then what is the style or genre that fits you and your personality? What type of music do you like to listen to? Are you a rap music fan?  Do you prefer a gospel sound, country sound or maybe an R&B sound?

Whatever type of music you prefer, take some time to really study it and take some time and listen to the beats to that style. Listen for where the emphasis is and on what number beat that you hear is accented. Listen to the style and see if it fits your personality. You see most people have a type of music that matches their musical personality. You want to make sure that your beats also match that style. If they don’t really fit you, then they are not going to have the correct sound when you finish creating them.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. If you are not a jazz enthusiast, then you probably are best not to make any jazz beats. You need to understand the sound of jazz as well as the syncopation of the jazz beat if you are going to make some jazz beats. You want to make sure that the beats that you make will show your ability as well as show your musical strength. They must match the flow and rhythm of the lyrics. It is important for you to carefully listen to other songs in your chosen genre.

Your ear will become a tremendous tool as you are making your beats. Listen to different voices as they repeat the lyrics. Listen to the use of various drums as you mix and mesh them into the beat. Remember that as you make the beats that it is the combination of the beats as well as the lyrics and melody that make the connection between the fans and the music.
