Both the simile and the metaphor are figures of speech. When you use the figure of speech that is known as a simile, you will be using a comparison using the words like or as. Similes can be used to liven up your words or as a description instead of using adjectives.

We use similes a lot in our conversation without even thinking about it. How many times have you used the following: as high as a kite or as white as snow or as dead as a doornail or how about as clear as mud?

A metaphor is actually more of a direct comparison between two nouns. They are similar to a simile in that they both are comparisons, but a metaphor does not use the words like or as.

There are different kinds of metaphors, but are a couple of examples. When you say a night owl or an early bird, these are examples of metaphors.

If you are looking for some similes and metaphors to use in your lyrics, there are several places to look, but some of the best and most entertaining places to find them are by watching stand-up comedy. They are great examples for coming up  with metaphors and funny ways of seeing the world.

Look for ways to state something that is pretty obvious, but folks are afraid to speak or state.

You can also state something from a different and unique point of view that most people don’t think about.

How to Write the Lyrics for Your Song

As you create your title, remember that you want it to be related to what you are trying to get across to your audience.

As you say the title of the song, listen to how it sounds to the ear. You want to make sure that it is pleasing to the ear.

As well as being to pleasing to the ear, you also want to make sure that after the listener hears that title that they want to also listen to the rest of the song.

Set aside an evening that will be totally dedicated to watching TV. Now you won’t be watching it to watch the TV shows. You want to watch with your ears instead of your eyes.

Make sure that you have a journal or notebook with you so that you can write down words, phrases or titles that catch your attention.

If they caught your attention, then they have caught other peoples’ attention. These may be words and phrases that you might be able to use yourself.

You can do the same thing with a book or a newspaper. Make it a habit to read books, newspapers and magazines, critically watching
for titles that might stand out.

Once you have these written down in your notebook, it is time to analyze what you have written down.

The first thing that you want to decide is what made you write it down to begin with. You want to see if it is the particular words in the phrase or if it is the sounds for the way the words are formed. Did the words rhyme are certain way? Make sure you have an understanding as to why you chose them.

Something else that you can do is to take a blank sheet of paper and for 5 minutes (set the timer) just start writing titles. Don’t
worry about how they look or how they sound, just write.

Write as fast as you can about anything that comes to your mind. Once the buzzer goes off, then stop writing. Read everything that you have written and look for anything that might catch your attention that you might be able to use in a title.

Once you have decided on a title write it down so that you don’t forget it. You can write it down in your rap journal. Write down any other titles that you thought about as you might be able to use them later on.

There are some exercises that you can do that will take your visions of what you see and incorporate them into your lyrics.

Exercise #1

Become a detective. It is time to do some noun observation. Remember that a noun describes a person, place or a thing.

In this exercise, pick a noun. After you select the noun, see if you can figure out what is going on behind it.

If it is a person, look into their eyes and see if you can figure out what they are thinking.

If you are observing a wall, what more can you come up with than it just being a wall.

Write what you have seen into a lyrical rap form. A neat way to write it would be to write it in the voice of the object that you are writing about.

Exercise #2

Close your eyes and pretend that you are in a strange place or a place that you have never been to before. Pretend that you are playing a game and someone has put a blindfold over your eyes.

In your mind, start painting a picture by answering some of the following questions. What does this new location look like?
Is the place that you are at inside a building or are you outside in the wood? What is the temperature like?

Is it in the heat of the summer, the cold of the winter or is it the spring or fall? Can you hear anything? What kind of activity
is going on around you? Are the streets busy around you?

Can you hear people around you? Answer all of these questions in a verse form.

Exercise #3

Gaze your eyes onto something for a longer period of time. This might be some people, the moon at night or even in the room that you like to relax in.

Now write about what you really see as well as what your mind doesn’t see. Write your thoughts about this; what your mind is seeing as well as what your eyes are seeing.

Exercise #4

Take a look at one of your favorite pictures. See if you can determine what it might have looked like many many years ago or maybe even a century ago. Make no assumptions.

See if you can determine what might have been going on either before the picture was taken or after the picture was taken. Now take those thoughts and put them into a rhyming rap form.
